What is Sin?

The Bible defines sin as anything that breaks God's moral Law. This Law is summarized in the 10 Commandments (taken from Deuteronomy 5):
  1.  Do not have any other gods
  2. Do not build any idols or images to be worshipped
  3. Do not use God's Name loosely or as a profanity
  4. Do not work on the Sabbath (one day each week set aside to rest and worship God)
  5. Honor your parents
  6. Do not murder
  7. Do not commit adultery
  8. Do not steal
  9. Do not bear false witness (lie or deceive)
  10. Do not covet
These are the basic requirements of God's Law. Everyone who has ever lived (except Jesus Christ) has committed one or more of these sins. "Murder" includes hating someone, and "adultery" includes lusting after someone. No one can reach this standard because everyone sins.
